Internship FAQ's

Does the Internship Coordinator find internships for students?
No. The Internship Coordinator for FCB is the contact person within the college for internship information, referrals, and advice.  The Coordinator assists students with all the necessary internship paperwork and is available throughout the semester of an internship to answer questions about the final assignment. The Coordinator is also the initial contact person for recruiters who have potential work opportunities. For information about finding internships visit the Career Planning and Internship/Job Search sections of the CDO website. Q: Where can I find internship opportunities? A: Of course there are the usual classified newspaper ads and job search websites, but there are also plenty of untapped resources waiting to be found around campus. Start networking with friends, family, instructors, advisors, student organizations, and former employers to gain valuable information and referrals about open positions. The CDO sends out a weekly email announcement of current internship and job opportunities. The CDO also hosts a Career Exploration Day for students to interact with employers looking specifically to hire NAU business students. The Gateway Student Success Center holds fall and spring career days open to all NAU students. Be sure to check for recruiters who will be on campus for interviews and information sessions.

What are companies that hire interns looking for?
Employers are looking for dependable and competent students who want to utilize and enhance the skills they learned through coursework. Many employers use field-work experience and internships as recruiting methods and view interns as potential permanent hires. Internships provide employers with an opportunity to observe an intern’s work performance before making a long-term offer.

How do I earn academic credit?
Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and be admitted to the Business Professional Program or pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Computer Technology to be eligible to earn academic credit for an internship. The internship job description must be approved by the department prior to it being accepted for field-work experience. The Internship Coordinator in the CDO is available for appointments to explain the paperwork process and answer any questions. The internship course is graded pass/fail and the grade is based on employer evaluations and a written assignment by the student.

Can I earn academic credit for a job I already have?
Maybe. It depends whether or not the job description meets the rigorous criteria to earn academic credit for an internship. In addition you must meet certain qualifications to enroll in an internship course. Work assignments must provide a significant learning experience comparable to that of an advanced business course and must be relevant to a students’ major. You CANNOT receive credit for a work experience that you have done in the past.

Can I earn academic credit for an internship if I am an undeclared-business student?
Students must be admitted to the Business Professional Program in order to be eligible to earn upper-division academic credit for internships. Additionally, the majority of employers would like to hire students who are in their junior or senior year of college; however, some employers do offer internships to sophomores and freshmen. Undeclared business students can receive a maximum three academic credits for their internship experience by enrolling in UC208. The hours earned will only count as general electives.
