The Ak-Chin Indian Reservation
is a 21,840-acre tract of fertile desert land lying in northwest Pinal
County, approximately 30 miles south of the Phoenix metro area. It is
situated in the Sonoran Desert in the Santa Cruz Valley of south central
Arizona and consists of Pima and Tohono O’odham Tribal members. The
land base is a nearly level, irregular shaped tract of land at
approximately 1,186 feet in altitude. Soils are sandy clay and fine
sandy loam of moderate permeability and subject to moderate water
erosion. Hot summers and mild winters facilitate a year-round growing
season. The average frost period is from early November through
mid-March.
Modern
archaeological methods have confirmed long-standing oral reports that
tribal ancestors have occupied and farmed the Ak-Chin land for several
thousand years. Because of extensive activity in both farming and
archeology, comprehensive geologic and soil sample studies have been
generated. The studies may be reviewed in the Ak-Chin Archives.
