The Havasupai
(people of the blue green water)
Reservation
is located at the southwest corner of the Grand Canyon National Park.
It consists of 188,077 acres. The nearest community is Peach Springs on
the Hualapai Reservation, which lies 79 miles southwest of the Havasupai
Reservation.
The Havasupai
Reservation is situated among plateaus, which are dissected with deep,
scenic canyons, typical of the Grand Canyon. Notable geographic
features include The Great Thumb, Long Mesa, and Tenderfoot Mesa, which
converge on the Coconino Plateau at the south end of the reservation.
Havasu (a.k.a.
Cataract) Canyon, now the permanent home of the Havasupai Tribe, is
internationally known for its blue water and spectacular waterfalls
adorned with travertine columns, shelves and skirts. Topography of the
plateaus consists of rolling, gentle slopes, to escarpments of Kaibab
Limestone.
Each year, thousands
of visitors hike or ride horses into the canyon. The tribe operates a
lodge at the bottom of the canyon (3000 feet deep), offering overnight
accommodations, as well as food at the lodge’s full-menu café.
The tribe’s museum
and cultural center provide visitors a chance to learn about the
Havasupai people’s heritage and culture.
