The Hopi Tribe’s
main reservation land base is located in the northeastern section of
Arizona with a total area of approximately 1,622,511 acres. The tribe
also owns 200 acres of industrial property in Winslow, Arizona, as well
as 429,000 acres of ranch land, which is deeded, federal, and state
leased property. The main reservation is bounded on all sides by the
Navajo Reservation. The area consists of low lying deserts, gullies,
buttes and mesas, rising as high as 7,200 feet. Most of the Reservation
is open land and is used for communities, religious, farming, business,
and livestock purposes. Hopi shrines, sacred natural features, and
ceremonial gathering areas are located throughout the land.
Elevations in the
northern highlands range from 5,800 to 7,100 feet. The southern part of
the Reservation is characterized by gently rolling hills and wide
valleys. Many small intermittent washes drain the highlands, fanning
out on the flats or merging with the major washes in the valley. The
major ground water source is the N aquifer, which provides the majority
of the usable community water supply. The scarcity of water is a
limiting factor in future economic or agricultural development. Hopi
lands have substantial deposits of coal, generating a significant source
of revenue to the Hopi tribal government.
