The San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation
encompasses 2,854 square miles. The Reservation covers portions of
Gila, Graham, and Pinal Counties, and a portion is contiguous with the
largest stand of ponderosa pines in the world. Over one-third of the
Reservation is either forested (175,000 acres) or wooded (665,000
acres). These lands are intriguing for their diversity and their
layered canopies of ponderosa and piñon pine, alligator juniper, and
oak. Both the forests and jumbled topography create a unique home to
many wildlife species such as elk, mule deer, turkey, black bears, and
mountain lions.
Many opportunities
exist for the angler on the San Carlos Reservation at warm- and
cold-water fisheries year-round. Furthermore, San Carlos Lake is the
hub of the Reservation’s recreational activity--a year-round fisherman’s
paradise. San Carlos Lake contains 19,500 acres of water when full.
Campers may enjoy the San Carlos Lake campgrounds, which are run by the
San Carlos Lake Development Corporation, a tribal business.
The San Carlos Apache
are actively involved in progressive economic growth and development, as
both the Tribe and individual members operate various businesses ranging
from operating the Apache Gold Casino to providing guided
fishing/hunting expeditions.
