Cushman & Wakefield’s top office expert in the Valley is
a bit cautious about 2007
The Arizona Republic

Yvette Armendariz
Although the commercial office market continues on a
good run, Larry Downey (’79 ECO) thinks it will be difficult to
repeat the stellar performance of 2006.
Right now, about 4.5 million square feet of office space
is under construction Valley-wide. Downey suspects developers won’t
flood the market with too much office space.
With few significant corporate headquarters, much of the
growth in offices in recent years comes from the opening or expansion of
regional operations and small businesses growing into midsize companies,
he said.
Although a fly fisherman at heart, Downey followed some
friends into commercial real estate after working for Xerox Corp. for
two years after graduating with a business degree from Northern Arizona
University. Downey left to join Grubb & Ellis, where he stayed about 17
years. Workdays were long and hard and not as green. But Downey loved
the art of the deal. Today, he is considered one of Cushman &
Wakefield’s top 40 producers companywide.

VP Jenkins appointed CAC’s
interim leader

The Central Arizona College Governing Board has selected
vice president Dennis Jenkins (’72 business preparation) to head the
college as it searches locally and nationally for a president.
Jenkins will be CAC’s executive vice
president/president-elect until June 30, then president/CEO. The
decision came Tuesday during the board meeting at the Aravaipa Campus.
The unanimous decision to select Jenkins to head the
college was followed by a unanimous decision to begin a national search
for a new president. The board asked that internal candidates be
included in the pool.
Jenkins said this morning that he plans to apply for the
job. His goals now are to continue CAC’s quality program and move the
college further down the current path. A member of the CAC staff since
1972, Jenkins has spent 35 years serving the institution as a business
professional.

Giving Credit Where It’s Due

Mark Meyer (’90 MGT), has been named Executive Director
for the Filene Research Institute, effective January 2007. Explaining
the convoluted journey from NAU to Filene, Meyer credits his sister,
also an NAU alum.
"My career has had some interesting twists and turns,
but my sister, Jennifer (Meyer) Schrage (’96 JOUR), reminded me that it
all started with working at Arizona State Credit Union as part of NAU’s
College of Business Administration Cooperative Education program," Meyer
says. "My roommate, who had held the intern position at the credit union
the previous semester, gave me a heads-up he was quitting, and I quickly
dropped off an application. I ended up working a few summers at the
credit union during law school."
"I never thought I’d pay much attention to credit unions
again. But after a brief stint in private practice in Colorado, I
followed my wife’s job back to Phoenix; and interestingly enough, via a
networking lunch with the credit union CEO, he offered me a job."
Now Meyer’s career path has taken him to Madison-and as
far away as China-as the Filene Research Institute explores issues vital
to the future of credit unions and financial services through
independent research and innovation programs. Now, that’s what we call
extra credit.
