James Stone, in the News
Northern Arizona
University in Flagstaff is building an entrepreneurship program one
piece at a time.

For several years the College of Business Administration
has offered a certificate in entrepreneurship. It has experienced an
enthusiastic response to a recently added course on business-plan
writing.
The program, dubbed "BizBlock," started in 2001 as a
one-time class for juniors and has since evolved into a college
mainstay, according to Assistant Professor of Management Chris
Scherpereel.
Students who take the nine-credit course work on teams
to develop a business concept, Scherpereel said. The school is
considering adding to BizBlock a class on new venture planning and a
class that integrates business, engineering and hard sciences, he said.
New entrepreneurship programs are also attracting
non-traditional students such as James Stone, 34, who returned to school
after working several years for Dell Inc.
As a part of the certificate requirements, he took
BizBlock. His team’s idea for an upscale bed-and-breakfast resort in
Flagstaff did not pan out, but he said that wasn’t a bad thing.
"We learned more from failure than we learned from
success," Stone said.
After graduating in December, James Stone wants work in project
management for a smaller firm and eventually start his own business in
the residential or commercial real estate sectors.

(FIN major and R.I.S.E. participant) writes:
[Dean Gerety,] thank you for your support allowing us to attend the R.I.S.E. conference. I also wanted to acknowledge your continued support to the students within the College of Business. I know that you work very hard to make sure that we are given opportunities that many other undergraduate students are not. Myself and several of my peers feel as though attending NAU has been the best decision we have ever made. The most important factor is that we have all had a challenging and positive experience within the College of Business. I am very fortunate to have selected a college that is so devoted to their undergraduate students, and I wanted to thank you for all the time that you have invested in making our college experience better than expected.
