Alumni Profile
J. Duross O'Bryan
1978 Accounting
When asked what
faculty member inspired him the most, Duross responded without
hesitation, "Dr. Dick Houser. He was my first upper class Accounting
professor with significant passion and love for Accounting. He was
brilliant and had a complete grasp of the concepts involved."
Duross loved the smaller school atmosphere, small
class size, and the focused approach. "It was the perfect fit for
me." The education that he received here was "imperative for my
career. It prepared me for my CPA exam." Even now, he can honestly
say "there is no part of what I learned at FCB that I don’t use on a
daily basis." Friendships were an important part of his campus
experience. He is still in contact with a number of the friends that
he made at the time.
After graduating he worked in auditing for 25 years, first with
KPMG and then PWC, two of the Big 4 Accounting firms. During that
time he became the partner-in-charge of dispute analysis and
investigations for the Western Region, partner-in-charge of the New
York Metro practice, and an audit partner of the Los Angeles office.
"In 1988 I was made a partner, a highlight of my career."
Accounting is as much a science as it is an art.
In
2003 he took a risk and left to start a branch for AlixPartners, LLP
in Los Angeles. His biggest challenge in doing so was finding the
right people to hire, as he knew his success depended on it. For two
months he was the only one in the office. He is now a managing
director for AlixPartners, as well as a forensic accountant and an
expert witness.
Duross has stayed connected to the FCB. For about
fifteen years he recruited annually on campus for the Big 4
accounting firms. He has guest-lectured in classes, worked with Beta
Alpha Psi (an accounting society), and attended Homecoming events.
In 1996 he was honored as an FCB Centennial Alumnus and inducted
into the FCB Alumni and Faculty Hall of Fame in 2003.
A career challenge that he frequently faces is to
stay current with accounting and auditing issues, a must for all
areas of his work. "Accounting is as much a science as it is an
art."
Professors encouraged him to pursue a job at the Big
4 firms and he was grateful for the advice. Because of that "I was
able to build a resumé that created wonderful opportunities for me."
His advice to alumni starting out in the auditing or the accounting
fields is "to join the largest and most prestigious firm that you
can; stay or use it as a stepping stone. Through those firms,
quality people are trained."
Duross lives in Malibu, California with his wife
Erin and seven children ranging from one to eighteen years old.
